Pumpkin Patch Adventures!

It's that time of year again and Cally couldn't wait to hit up all the pumpkin patches around. From petting zoos and pony rides to inflatable slides and trampolines, kettle corn, pumpkin picking, and everything in between, our weekends were filled with lots of fun and adventure! Here are some pictures of our fun time!

Fun in Thailand

After East Timor, the guys had a very much needed liberty stop in Phuket, Thailand. Here are some pictures from Zane's adventures in Thailand and a short email to me about his outings:

"Thailand was great. By the time we got off the boat it was already evening time and by the time we got to the hotel it was late, probably at least 1900-2000. We went out on the town and had a pretty damn good time. I was pretty hammered by the time I got back. Nothing to extravagant, just the standard shinanigans. Patong Beach is pretty cool, you’d have a good time there. The main street is Bangla St. There are bars, shops restaurants, etc. everywhere, but Bangla is the main drag. At night it is shut down to vehicles. Well off the main street there are “soys” which are basically big alleyways that are full of bars on each side. It is a pretty wild bar scene. Honestly though, its not as wild as I thought it might be. There are street vendors everywhere, people that haven’t been around like we have were overwhelmed but the street vendors are no worse than Mexico, definitely very tame compared to Morocco."

"The next day I got up early for scuba diving, I was pretty hungover and the boat ride didn’t help much. By the time we got to diving though, I was good and it was pretty great diving. The water was about 80 degrees and super clear. There was some coral reef around and sand. The fish were tropical, but there were these huge schools of little neon fish that numbered in hundreds of thousands so those were really cool. Some guys saw octopus, I didn’t, but I saw a big eel, some big blow fish, and a big ol' grouper that let me pet it. We went to 3 different sites, one had a wreck of an old dive boat, kinda cool because it had all the coral and fish on it but the actual wreck wasn’t too awesome. All in all great diving, I really wish you could have been there.

That night I took it real easy, just kinda browsed shops, had dinner, a few beers and turned in early. The food was actually really good, and no kidding you’d like it as well. I think its been a long time since I had thai food but its not weird or crazy. Seriously, you would like it a lot.

I got up the next day and went for the elephant ride, it was pretty fun. It was pouring down rain on the drive there. And I don’t mean a drizzle, like torrential down pour. It stopped after a few minutes of getting there and standing under a shelter so we lucked out with the weather. They had some monkeys that I played with and then we got on the elephants and rode up there muddy jungle trails. Cally would have loved it."

5 Months Old!

Hunter is 5 months old today! With Zane gone, this past month has been an adjustment period for all of us but he has done wonderfully and continues to be a great little one. Now that the teething phase has officially begun, he is almost frantic about putting whatever he can in his mouth and slobbers like crazy, soaking all his shirts and/or bibs. His sleeping patterns have changed a bit and he's regressed a little. He's back to waking up several times a night to eat, although its mostly for comfort. He never fusses too much or cries, he just likes to cuddle up and fall asleep close to me. I can't really resist that so after the first wake up, he usually ends up in my bed the rest of the night. He is a really happy little guy, always smiling and "talking" aloud. He has become more interactive with Cally and she loves it. He is wearing 9-12 month clothing and continues to be quite the chunker. Life with him is wonderful and I'm really enjoying every moment with him.

Zane the Humanitarian

Zane sent these pictures recently. The USS Peleliu did some humanitarian work in East Timor, a small island in southeast Asia and Zane got to be a part of the mission. This is what he wrote regarding his experience:

"I flew all day yesterday and then stayed overnight on the island. Then flew more today. It was the best flying I've ever had."

"I flew up into the mountains and landed by this stream. Saw some crocodiles and tons of water buffalo."

The coolest thing we did is called MedCap, short for Medical Capability. Basically, we take some of the doctors and corpsman up to the villages that don't even have road access and they stay there for a few hours giving tylenol and tums and candy and stuff, no real medical treatment. I think they give kids shots and stuff like that too. These sites that we go to are so remote up in the mountains. I see all these villages with nothing more than a single file trail going up thousands of feet for miles to get to them. When we land there, big crowds of people just appear to go see us. I can't figure out what the hell they're doing up there?!

I was the section lead so I got to make all the decisions, so naturally, we kicked ass and had a awesome time doing it. The place we went to yesterday was incredible flying and then we woke up this morning, saw that we were tasked with doing it again to a different place and it was even better. Way up in the clouds and mountains, not even enough room for 2 helos to land. So I had my dash 2 hold in the air while I went in first, found a tiny place and set down. Then Kevin Rector came in a had to main mount landing to unload his people because he couldn't find anyplace to set down. Best flying I've ever had."

Zane the Shellback

I received this email from Zane and the picture the following day.

"We are going to cross the equator soon. Traditionally this is a big deal for the Navy (and Marines on the ship) because you are a “WOG” if you haven’t crossed before and when you cross for the first time you become a “Shellback,” but in order to become a shellback you would get hazed relentlessly.  I’ve always heard you get food and garbage dumped on you and you have to crawl around in it, and stuff like that. All in good fun though. Well now that hazing is a hot topic in the DOD we are not going to do anything. I guess I will become a glorious shellback without the initiation."
